With developments in modern housing and people now looking to be environmentally friendly, chimneys and smoke producing fuels are taking a downward turn in the popularity stakes. Modern house owners are looking for fireplaces that are appealing to the eye, easy to ignite and emit no fumes.

Gel fires fall into these categories, they can be used without a flue being required and are available in modern designs, some are wall mounted, some can be purchased as a stand alone fire, they can even be used outdoors with no problems. They are fired by using a gel compound that is produced mainly from plants or wood from forests, the fires emit no gases, produce a direct heat without producing any soot or mess.

The main advantage of gel fires has to be that they do not require gas or electricity to run and the ignition is instant, visually they look just like a normal gas fire but as they are a far safer means for warmth in your house, they are often supplied without the need for a front glass making them a lot more pleasing to the eye. The gel required to run these fires is available in a canister or bottle and once this has been fully used it is simply a matter of replacing the canister or refilling the box from the bottle,if a canister is used it only takes a couple of minutes to change over. All of the suppliers give a usage of 1 litre of gel will supply the fire for 4 hours of burning. Some gel holders are capable of holding 2-3 canisters so shop around to see which fireplace is best for you, there is already a large range to select from even though gel fires have only been around in recent years.
